Rule of Thirds, Diagonals, and Triangles

Rule of Thirds

Diagonals

Triangles

Artists Statement:
In this project, I had to take pictures of rule of thirds, diagonals, and triangles. The rule of thirds emphasizes offsetting the object of focus from the center of the photo to the left or right. Placing objects on the intersections of the thirds works best. To capture photos that have the rule of thirds, I had to find interesting objects of focus. Then, when I went to take the picture, I would offset the specific object so as to place it according to the grid lines on the camera, not at the center. A good diagonal picture requires the key lines in the image to be diagonally placed so as to lead to the object of focus or to divide the image to allow the viewer to see the emphasis on the diagonal objects. To capture this type of photo, I looked for spaces that were defined by diagonal lines or I adjusted the frame of the camera to put emphasis on the lines. Lastly, the triangle images are like the diagonal ones, but put the emphasis on a complete triangle. This can mean, using three key objects to create a triangle between them or finding focal triangle shapes. When trying to photography triangles, I looked around and squinted my eyes to find where a triangle was the dominant shape and then tilted the frame to further the effect.

  1. I like how creative you were by using the bush as an example of triangular composition. Obviously the bush is not a perfect triangle, but it is almost as if I am looking at a triangular object because that is what I get from the image. I think that the mercedes badge as an example of triangular composition is not as successful. I do not notice any of the triangles as much as the shape of the symbol.

  2. With the leveling and straight on shot of the wight part of the house, you can see how clearly the pink part is at an angle. The shadow underneath the pink part also emphisizes the angle and its depth. And in the back, you can see how the white railing and side of the building both form another clear diagonal.

  3. my favorite Rule of Thirds is the wall plug. It is nice how you clearly could see the focus of the picture. However, with your other Rule of Thirds pictures, try and make the focus a little more obvious

  4. My favorite of your photos is the first rule of thirds photo. I can tell you tried to look for things that were different and out of the ordinary. I think for a few of these you got really caught up in the exact thing you were trying to look for, I definitely was too. I think the only problem with that is we don't end up getting an amazing photo because we were trying to incorporate the theme.

  5. I like your first rule of thirds photo the lack of color and the one spot of many colors is very cool and it was interesting that you turned the image of the restroom upside down
